Canada police charge three men in murder of Sikh separatist leader

TORONTO — Canadian police have charged three men with the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar, 45, was shot dead on June 18 by masked gunmen outside a temple in Surrey, British Columbia.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) announced the charges at a press conference on Friday. The three accused are Indian nationals Gurjinder Singh Dhaliwal, 28, Jatinder Singh Dhaliwal, 26, and Meninder Dhaliwal, 23.

The RCMP said the three men are alleged members of a hit team that was sent from India to assassinate Nijjar. The suspects were arrested in Ontario on Thursday.

Nijjar was a prominent figure in the Sikh separatist movement in Canada. He was a close associate of Talwinder Singh Parmar, the founder of the Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh militant group that was responsible for several terrorist attacks in India.

The RCMP said the investigation into Nijjar's murder is ongoing. They are working with Indian authorities to identify and apprehend other suspects.

The Indian government has condemned the murder of Nijjar and has called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
