National Guard New York

New York Army National Guard

Proudly Serving the Empire State

Mission and History

The New York Army National Guard is a part-time state-based military component that serves a dual mission: to provide combat-ready forces to the federal government and to respond to state emergencies.

The New York National Guard has a long and distinguished history dating back to the American Revolution. The first militia units in New York were organized in the 17th century, and the state's militia played a major role in the Revolutionary War.

The New York National Guard continued to serve the state and nation throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, including during the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

Today, the New York Army National Guard is one of the largest and best-equipped National Guard organizations in the country. The Guard's 10,000 members are organized into 16 brigades and 63 battalions.

The New York Army National Guard is committed to serving the people of New York and the nation. The Guard's members are ready to respond to any emergency, from natural disasters to terrorist attacks.
