Three oil works from former Shrewsbury School art director to go under the hammer

Three oil paintings by former Shrewsbury School art director John Alford have been consigned for auction by a Devon art collector.

Works depict scenes from the school and date from 1971, 1978 and 1985

The paintings depict scenes from the school and date from 1971, 1978 and 1985. They are expected to fetch a combined total of £10,000-£15,000 when they go under the hammer at Bonhams in London on March 23.

Alford was born in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, in 1934 and studied at the Slade School of Art. He was appointed director of art at Shrewsbury School in 1961 and remained in the post until 1989.

He is best known for his landscape and marine paintings, and his work has been exhibited in galleries around the world. He was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1973 and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1980.

Alford died in 2016.
